Founded in 1870, Florissant began as a mining camp in 1859 during the Pikes Peak Gold Rush that didn't exactly pan out. Florissant is now know for the Fossil Beds National Monument. The fossil beds are 34 million years old and you can see insects, trees, plants, and spiders.
